Present Indefinite Tense:Easy tips to learn

1.Introduction:-

The Present Indefinite Tense, also known as Simple Present
Tense, is used to describe facts, habitual truth, universal truth, scientific
truth, scheduled event, actions that happen regularly etc.

  • The lion lives in forest. (fact) 
  • He smokes daily. (Habit) 
  • The stars shine at night. (Universal truth) 
  • The water freezes at 0 degree celcius. (scientific truth) 
  • The Saints express departs.  at 9 AM. (scheduled event). 
  • He goes to temple daily. 

2. Helping verb:- do/does

(I)Do is used with plural number subject 

For example:- boys, girls, women, men, Children, people etc. 

(2) Do is used with these personal pronouns:-

      I, We, you and they.

 4. Adverbs:-

Always, usually, daily, seldom, generally, often, sometimes, never, regularly, frequently, everyday/week, eachday/week etc. 

  • He always speaks truth.
  • He never tells a lie.
  • My father walks daily.
  • We usually take dinner at 7 PM.
  • She often forgets her keys.
  • I sometimes drink coffee in the evening
  • Students generally wake up early.
  • We exercise regularly.
  • They hold a meeting each week.
  • Students seldom watch TV.
  • They never arrive late.
  • He frequently checkes his phone.
  • I read the newspaper daily.
  • He meditates for 10 minutes each day.

5. Sentence Structure:

    1. Affirmative Sentences: 

    Helping verbs (do/does) are not used in affirmative sentences. 

     Subject + Base Verb /Base verb+(-s or -es) +Object.

      Spelling Rules for Third-Person Singular number:  

         Add -es, if the verb ends in -sh, -ch, -ss, -x, -o,-z. 

  •        wash – washes, go – goes, 
  •        fix – fixes, quiz – quizes.
  •        pass – passes, hatch – hatches. 

For verbs ending in -y (preceded by a consonant), change -y to -i +es.

  •   study – studies,  fly –  flies.  

Add -s, if the verb ends in other letter. 

       Examples:-

  •        Aman eats breakfast daily.  
  •        She takes tea daily.  
  •         He plays games everyday. 

      2.Negative Sentence:-

           Subject+ don’t/doesn’t+ Verb Ist form+ object. 

               Examples:- 

  •   They don’t like onion.  
  •   He doesn’t play football in the evening.  

      3.Interrogative Sentences: 

    (i) Do/Does + Subject + verb Istform+object?  

    (ii) ‘Wh’ word (interrogative word)  +Do/Does + Subject+ verb Ist form+object?  

Examples:-  

  •          Do you drink coffee?  
  •         Does  the shop  open at 9 AM daily?  
  •         Why do they go to market daily? 

6. When to Use the Present Indefinite Tense

          1. Habits & Routines:- Actions, you  do regularly.

  • People take tea daily.
  • Children play game daily.
  • I practice yoga every morning.
  • She checks emails at work regularly.

          2. Universal Truths, Facts or  scientific truths.  

  •    Water  freezes 0°C.
  •   The Sun sets in the West. 
  • The moon gives light.
  • Light travels faster than sound.
  • Gravity pulls objects towards the earth’s center.

         3. Scheduled Events,  Timetables or fixed plans.  

  •    The train departs at 7 PM.  
  •    Class starts  at 9 AM daily. 

        4. Stative Verbs:-

1.Mental and Emotions, 

  • She knows the answer to all questions.
  • He believes in everyone.
  • They understand the instructions.

2. Possession and relationship

  •  He has two sisters.
  • I have a car.
  • This book belongs to me.

3. Sense and Perceptions

  • This soup tastes delicious.
  • The flower smells sweet.
  • He sees a bird outside.
